Premier League star Petr Cech needed plastic surgery

Premier League star Petr Cech needed 50 stitches and plastic surgery after a clash in training left him with horrific facial injuries.

Chelsea’s Czech international keeper now seems certain to miss the rest of the season.

Cech was caught accidentally by team-mate Tal Ben Haim’s studs on Sunday, gashing open his face from his lip down past his jaw.

It is feared it could be six months before the cut – which required 30 stitches at the deepest part of the wound and the intervention of a plastic surgeon – has healed enough for Cech to play again.

As well as suffering heavy loss of blood, it is understood there was major swelling.

The mental impact of the injury on Cech - who was treated at St John and St Elizabeth Hospital in London - has also yet to be determined.

Unfortunate Cech had his skull was fractured at Reading in October 2004. Cech underwent surgery for a depressed fracture, which came close to costing him his life.

Cech made his comeback in January 2005 and has continued to wear protective headgear since, including at the training ground.
