MBE for Dawn Cragg, Expert in Micropigmentation

A Retford entrepreneur who brought Professional make-up and Beauty training to the town in the early 1980’s has been appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire in the New Year 2010 Honours list for outstanding achievement in developing medical tattooing as a service to healthcare.

Dawn Cragg is the former owner and principal of the exclusive Park School of Beauty Therapy, Graduates from the school now hold some of the most prestigious posts in Beauty Therapy, Television, Film and Theatre worldwide. One of the specialist courses offered was camouflage make-up for covering birthmarks, burns, and scars resulting from surgical or accident trauma.

Although she was busy developing her businesses, Dawn still continued with her skin camouflage, helping people to cope with blemishes and scar disfigurement. She was unhappy with the fact that for them this was a daily task, very time consuming and a big disruption in their lives. This resulted in Dawn exchanging her make-up brushes for a tattoo machine which she had been practising with since the 80’s with its potential use as a more permanent method of camouflage.

After selling her schools, Dawn set up a clinic for cosmetic and medical tattooing (also known as Micropigmentation) in Harley Street, where she very quickly became established as the leader in the industry. Dawn has trained many others, including Doctors, Surgeons, Nurses, Maxillofacial Technicians, Make-Up artists and Beauty Therapists. There are many hospitals throughout the world where, for example, tattooing of the areola after breast reconstruction following a mastectomy is now standard procedure.

At the age of 70 years Dawn is in demand as an international expert in cosmetic and medical tattooing. She travels on a regular basis to Moscow and other Russian-speaking countries including Kazakhstan and the Ukraine, where she teaches her skills.

She has no plans to retire and will be consulting at clinics in London (Harley Street and Maida Vale), Birmingham, Manchester, Nottingham, and Norwich plus two or three premises in Scotland. Dawn is also trained as an Expert Witness; she is able to prepare legal reports and also to testify in Clinical Negligence litigation.

So, this talented lady has made an impact on the lives of thousands of people who she has helped to face life again with confidence, by her own hand and the many people she has trained internationally.

When asked how she felt receiving the news from the Prime Minister’s office, Dawn’s reply was “If this award has raised the profile of make-up in the eyes of the average person, if it has created a general awareness that for many people, whether cosmetic, conventional camouflage make-up or medical tattooing, it is the only way that they feel able to face the world each day, then I am absolutely delighted”.
